Kiss Dry Lips Goodbye!

Liplicious.

Can you say this about your lips?

Unfortunately, some of us suffer from dry, chapped lips and surely, this discourages us from puckering up pretty. Maybe you love to talk a lot or smile a lot and that’s wonderful, but when you have dry lips, it can be bothersome and uncomfortable. Plus, it can lead to more serious problems like sores and infections!

Our lips are low in melanin, a pigment which protects the skin against sun damage. Lip skin is also thin and easily loses moisture. It’s these characteristics that make our lips prone to drying, cracking, chapping and blistering.

There are several causes of dry lips: dehydration, medicine side-effects, lack of vitamins and proper nutrition, cosmetic ingredients, unnecessary, repetitive licking of the lips and exposure to sun, wind, cold, and dry air. Needless to say, we should give our lips the same amount of pampering we give to our face and hair to look healthier, more beautiful and kiss-worthy!

The quickest, easiest remedy for dry, chapped lips is to keep ourselves hydrated by drinking lots of water, since this helps make our skin soft and supple. Other things we can do to keep our lips from drying are:

  • Eating foods rich in Vitamin B such as oats, tuna, liver, potatoes, avocados, bananas and legumes.
  • Choosing lip balms with sunscreen and those made from natural oils such as almond, apricot or jojoba.
  • Kicking the smoking habit!
  • Applying lip balm at least five minutes before heading outdoors.
  • Keeping lips lubricated even during bedtime since lips can get dry right after brushing one’s teeth!

Of course, you can always buy lip balms that are high in natural oils and beeswax, or you can just make your own hydrating and soothing lip concoctions! Today, say goodbye to dry, chapped lips and pucker up with these delicious lip balm and lip gloss recipes:

Lovely Lip Balm

Ingredients:
4 tsp soy wax
4 tsp shea butter
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
15 large-sized vitamin E capsules

Directions:

  1. Place all the ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Place bowl in a double boiler or a large saucepan of water over low heat.
  3. Let the ingredients melt. Don’t let it come to a boil.
  4. Once melted, remove from heat and stir well.
  5. Pour the mixture into small bottles or containers and allow to cool completely before closing or using.

Homemade Lip Gloss

Ingredients:
1 teaspoon honey
1 drop of vitamin E oil
10 fresh cranberries
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil

Directions:

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Put the bowl in a microwave oven for a couple of minutes or until the mixture just begins to boil. (You can also heat the bowl in a pan of water on a stovetop).
  3. Stir well while gently crushing the berries.
  4. Cool the mixture for 5 minutes.
  5. Strain the mixture to remove pieces of fruit.
  6. Stir again and set aside. Let it cool completely.
  7. Transfer the mixture into a small bottle or container.
  8. Apply lip gloss to your lips and smile!

Note: You can wear this lip gloss alone or on top of your favorite lipstick for that extra shine!
