- Will you offer more designs and colors?
One of the key ideas behind our eco-friendly clothing is that they are timeless classics and provide great value because they can be worn for many uses. Eventually, we would like to offer other pieces, as long as they meet our design criteria: 1) flattering, 2) timeless classic, 3) UN-trendy. Instead of offering seasonal styles, we will offer different colors of the same designs. So look for warmer colors in the fall and brighter colors in the spring months. In essence, we are doing our little part to divert the tons of clothing that end up in landfills.
- Why don't you offer t-shirts with prints or messages?
When cleaning out their closets, most people are more likely to throw away clothing that is "out of style" and has messages on them. Our goal is that you wear our organic t-shirts today, tomorrow, and ten years from now. So if by not offering screenprints on our shirts, you are less likely to throw it out or even hand it down to someone else, then we've achieved our goal.
- What is greenwashing?
This is when a company makes a misleading claim about the environmental benefits of their product or service, or even their company practice, with the motive of making themselves appear to be more environmentally friendly.
- There have been claims that bamboo clothing manufacturers are greenwashing. Is this true?
Many companies, even those other than bamboo manufacturers, have been accused of greenwashing. We believe the problem has to do with the bamboo calling themselves "eco-friendly" when the processing of bamboo into fiber really is very chemically intensive. There are two types of fiber derived from bamboo. The first is usually described as mechanical and the second as chemical. Most often, the bamboo is chemically processed and the fiber produced is technically classified as 'viscose' and is properly labeled as 'viscose from bamboo'. Because of the chemical processing, some critics assert that the fabric is not eco-friendly and, therefore, greenwashing. The problem with this statement is that almost all clothing is manufactured and finished using lots of energy and chemicals. It is also important to note that other fibers, such as rayon and modal, is made using chemicals. Knowing this, we decided to use bamboo because of its great environmental benefits.
- What is the difference between rayon and viscose from bamboo?
For apparel labeling purposes, they are one and the same. Under the Textiles and Wools Act, clothing manufacturers can only name fibers that are recognized by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC will also allow fibers that are recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Rayon is a name recognized by the FTC and viscose is recognized by the ISO; therefore either term can be used. However, the general concensus among bamboo apparel manufacturers is to call it 'viscose.'
